Introductory Physics, 2nd Edition

Sample PagesTOC

Made for standard track 9th to 11th grade students, Introductory Physics incorporates math, history, and epistemology. Beautiful graphics and lucid text are included in this modestly-sized volume that students will appreciate.

Introductory Physics is the perfect text draw your students upward into the adult world of scientific investigation.

In a “physics first” high school sequence, this book serves grade-level freshmen. But it is a perfect text for physics occurring in the sophomore or junior year. Two optional, more-challenging chapters (buoyancy and geometric optics) have been added for those older students ready to take on a little more material.

Introductory Physics is ideal for the “physics first” high school science program, which places a physics-based course in the freshman year. But this book contains two optional chapters with more challenging math content (Pressure and Buoyancy, and Geometric Optics) and can be used in a 10th or 11th grade course as well.

Students should be enrolled in concurrent algebra I to use this book, which is standard track mathematics for 9th grade. We make our exercises challenging, requiring students to utilize multiple concepts and skills to arrive at an answer, but nothing higher than basic algebra is required for this text.

The methodology behind all Novare textbooks is the Mastery-Learning paradigm that breaks the CRAM-PASS-FORGET Cycle that dominates so much of education. This demoralizing reality is addressed and countered by several strategic methods, but the centerpiece is cumulative assessments, i.e. weekly quizzes and final exams. Students must develop a new approach to their personal management of their study that includes about one third of their time devoted to review of prior material while they learn new material. We enable this new approach with the Weekly Review Guides found on the Resource CD for this text.

As with all NSM texts, Introductory Physics is written from the perspective of the historic Christian faith. Read about how we bring this about on our Textbook Philosophy page—it’s different from other Christian publishers.drawing of triangle

We place a lot of content dealing with the history of science in the body of the text, not in a sidebar where it can be ignored. Knowledge of how we got here is essential to understanding how science works. There is even some epistemology concerning the nature of scientific knowledge—something you wont find elsewhere. And technical communication, both written and verbal, is emphasized.

And if that wasn’t enough, we take pride in producing physical books of top quality. Our beautiful hardbacks are sturdy and enduring. We use library quality, symth-sewn binding so pages never fall out and the spine never cracks. And we prefer a page layout approach that is aesthetically sensitive, pleasing, and engaging.

So why have physics in 9th grade? For a thorough explanation of the great advantages to “physics first,” please read our September 2013 Newsletter. This article also lays out our two-track (grade-level and honors/accelerated) plan for high school science and math.

See our textbook philosophy for more details about our unique approach to textbook design. This text is not an upper-level vector/trig-based course; for an advanced, vector-based text, see our book Physics: Modeling Nature.

Student instructions for five complete laboratory experiments are included in the appendix. Teachers instructions are included in the supplemental book, Experiments for Introductory Physics and ASPC.
